Performance Testing : Benchmark, track, improve
“Performance testing at Athleticamps is a great way to learn about the improvement process. Their team is knowledgable and passionate about how performance testing can benefit all levels of cyclists and triathletes. Don’t miss this opportunity to take your performance to the next level” -Dr. Massimo Testa, BMC Team Physician
“AthletiCamps have been testing me for years. I view it as a vital component to my program and their knowledge about testing procedures, review of results, and applying it to my current level of fitness is the best I have found. I urge anyone who is serious about their cycling to visit AthletiCamps and get on the program!” - Dan Martin (Safeway), 2009, 2011 Canadian Masters Champion
Benefits of Performance Testing
No matter what your goal or level, performance testing can benefit all riders whether your goals are racing or improving performance in centuries. Testing provides you with a blueprint of what type of athlete you are and a benchmark of your current fitness level. Using this valuable information and knowing your goals, an accurate training program can be applied and lead to improvement.
The formula’s of the 1970’s (e.g. Max heart rate (HR) = 220 - age) were developed by researchers and do not apply to the majority of the population. Performance testing at AthletiCamps can give you accurate data, giving you the assurance that your training program is set up for you. Plus, it’s just plain old fun to be testing in a lab, just like the professionals!
At AthletiCamps, testing will provide you with these valuable results:
- 7 heart rate and power training zones
- Wattages at threshold and peak of power
- Body composition
- Watts per kilo of body weight at threshold and peak
- Detailed review of testing results
- Specific workouts using your training zones
- Training consultation
Alot of different programs (books and other coaching programs and camps) have you do “field testing” to determine these parameters. At AthletiCamps, you will come away with the security that your program is based off of your unique physiology and not created from guess work.

Options and Costs
Lactate Response to Exercise
The blood lactate profile is the most important predictor of endurance performance potential in steady-state events. The lactate profile test (with determination of lactate threshold) is used by elite endurance athletes to determine optimal training intensities and is the most effective way to track the effectiveness of training. After determining a lactate profile, we will provide training zones based on both heart rate and power. This test can also provide the athlete with optimal paces for racing.

VO2 Max and Ventilatory Threshold
VO2 testing is an excellent indicator of the athlete overall fitness level and performance potential. Heart rate and power values that are determined from the athlete’s ventilatory threshold are also provided. Athleticamps uses a state of the art Parvo Medics metabolic cart for assessment. Parvo Medics is the leader in meabolic assessment used by the top schools and hospitals in the country

Max VO2 and Lactate Response to Exericise
Having both tests done in one visit is recommended. Each test provides the athlete with views of different physiological systems.
Cost - 15% off when both tests are done the same day
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
Determine your resting metabolic rate to determine daily caloric needs
Cost - $150
Calorimetry
This assessment is performed on medical grade equipment, and is used to determine an athlete's metabolic rate at rest and at various intensities of exercise. Percentage of calories burned as fat and carbohydrate are reported. The results of this assessment can be used to manipulate body composition and/or develop nutrition strategies for endurance athletes.
