Benefits of Performance Testing
No matter what your goal or level, performance testing can benefit all riders whether your goals are racing or improving performance in centuries. Testing provides you with a blueprint of what type of athlete you are and a benchmark of your current fitness level. Using this valuable information and knowing your goals, an accurate training program can be applied and lead to improvement.
The formula’s of the 1970’s (e.g. Max heart rate (HR) = 220 - age) were developed by researchers and do not apply to the majority of the population. Performance testing at AthletiCamps can give you accurate data, giving you the assurance that your training program is set up for you. Plus, it’s just plain old fun to be testing in a lab, just like the professionals!
At AthletiCamps, testing will provide you with these valuable results:
- 7 heart rate and power training zones including lactate or ventilatory threshold
- Wattages at threshold and peak of power (cycling); speed at threshold and peak (running)
- Body composition including body fat and body mass index (BMI)
- Wattage per kilo of body weight at threshold and peak (cycling)
- Detailed review of testing results
- Sample training program
- Specific workouts using your unique training zones
- Training consultation
Alot of different programs (books and other coaching programs and camps) have you do “field testing” to determine these parameters. At AthletiCamps, you will come away with the security that your program is based off of your unique physiology and not created from guess work.
Options and Costs (Cycling or Running)
Lactate Response to Exercise - $175 per athlete*
The blood lactate profile is the most important predictor of endurance performance potential in steady-state events. The lactate profile test (with determination of lactate threshold) is used by elite endurance athletes to determine optimal training intensities and is the most effective way to track the effectiveness of training. After determining a lactate profile, we will provide training zones based on both heart rate and power (for cycling) or speed (for running). This test can also provide the athlete with optimal paces for racing.

VO2 Max and Ventilatory Threshold - $175 per athlete*
VO2 testing is an excellent indicator of the athlete overall fitness level and performance potential. Heart rate and power (for cycling) values that are determined from the athlete’s ventilatory threshold are also provided.
Max VO2 and Lactate - $295 per athlete*
Combination of both tests. Or two of the same tests for different sports.
Calorimetry - $225 per athlete*
Determine your resting metabolic rate (RMR) and calories burned during exercise (fat, carbohydrate) at different training zones
Testing / Coaching Consultation - Add $75 to above testing*
Design a custom training program based on your goals and results of the performance testing.
Testing / Coaching Consultation / On the Road Analysis - Add $150 to testing*
Utilize the results of the performance testing by performing a field test. Work on technical skills including climbing and descending. Typically lasts a half-day.
On the Road Training Sessions - $75 per hour*
Perhaps you need some specific on-bike instruction. Your time with the coach will be planned in advance, maximizing your benefits. Topics can include climbing, descending, strength workouts, and skills.
