Motorpacing
Motorpacing has many advantages to bike racers. It’s a fantastic way to increase your leg speed and simulate race intensity in a very controlled setting. Motorpacing is drafting behind a scooter (in our case a Yamaha Zuma 125) to attain the type of training that best benefits the rider and where they are in their training program. It allows simulation of pack racing conditions without having to be in a race, and also gives full control over variables like speed and duration.
To fully prepare for high speed races, you really need part of your training to be at that speed. It’s pretty tough for most people to hold 25 or 28 miles per hour by themselves, but behind the scooter, it’s like being in the pack of a fast pack race. Intervals and sprint work can also be done by either varying the speed of the scooter or riding outside of the draft during the interval. Criterium racers may stick in the draft and come out at set intervals to sprint – a similar effort to a technical criterium. Road racers may ride behind the scooter at a very high speed – a similar effort to trying to hang in to a breakaway or fast pack. The possibilities are unlimited, and the scooter is useful for all kinds of racing.
When you need speed work, pack riding, and intensity, all while having full control over the variables, motorpacing is the ticket!
