Individual Coaching - John Hansen
Coaching Specialties- Triathlon, running (800m through marathon)
John is what we would call a true “student of his sport.” He combines his extensive racing background in running and triathlons with his formal education and work in the field of exercise physiology (Master’s degree) to provide clients with the best possible coaching insights, techniques and programs in order for them to reach their full potential.
John has been ranked among the elite runners and age group triathete during his career spanning now over 35 years. As a high schooler he had a PR in the mile of 4:12 and was ranked 10th in mile the United States as a High School Senior. John went on to have successful college career that include a 1500m Junior College All American honor and an All SEC Conference honors at Auburn University in the Steeplechase under head coach Mel Rosen. Mel Rosen was the 1992 Olympic Coach for the US Track and Field team. John had college PR’s of, 3:47 1500m, 14:32 5000m and 30:36 10,000m.
After college and several years of road racing John’s interest turned to triathlons in 1990 where he found immediate success qualify for the Amateur National championships his first full year of competing. After relocating back to California John trained under Michael Collins (Davis Aquatic Masters, Davis California – one of the most successful master’s coaches in the United Sates and a former Pro Triathlete). John continued to compete in triathlons with PRs is the Olympic distance triathlon of 1:55 and 4:17 in the Half Ironman. He consistently placed in the top 10 overall, had two top 75 rankings as a US amateur and two national championship appearances. John’s interest in human physiology and sport and his desire to coach lead him to purse a master’s degree in exercise physiology and a coaching career in the great sport of triathlon which began in 1998.
John, besides coaching, is currently an Exercise Physiologist and consultant at the UC Davis Sports Performance facility in Sacramento California. John has worked under the tutelage of Dr Massimo Testa who was team doctor for the 7-11, Motorola, and Mapei professional cycling teams during the course of more than 15 Tours de France and Giro d’Italias, his experiences are unprecedented. John’s work puts him on the cutting edge of Exercise Physiology with the goal of enhancing athletic performance.
John has written several training based articles for the Sacramento Bee including articles on training logs, recovery heart rate, rating of perceived exertion and others. He has many success stories including coaching athletes for the Long Course World Championships and the Ironman World Championships (Hawaii.) He has also has coached triathletes for ironman competitions around the world including New Zealand, Switzerland, Arizona, Louisville, Wisconsin and Coeur d’Alene.

Cost: $225 per month

- Limited riding, running with coach
- Initial heart rate versus power testing to determine heart rate and power training zones, wattages (cycling)
- Heart rate versus power follow-up testing (as needed)
- Body composition including body fat and body mass index (BMI)
- Pedal stroke analysis (optional)
- Performance testing (Max VO2 or Lactate Response to Exercise - optional)
- Bike fit or gate analysis (optional)
- 6 month commitment, $50 start-up fee
